Dr Paul Connett at the Watermark, Ivybridge, February 2010
Air pollution damages human health.
Adverse health effects from short and long term exposure to air pollution range from
premature deaths caused by heart and lung disease to worsening of asthmatic conditions and
can lead to reduced quality of life and increased costs of hospital admissions. Current
evidence suggests that there is no "safe " limit for exposure to fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ).
The 2007 Air Quality Strategy 2 (AQS) estimated that based on air quality data from 2005,
manmade PM 2.5 alone reduced the average life expectancy of people living in the UK by
7-8 months and imposed an annual cost of £18 billion, within the range of £9-20 billion.

Lee Mill, Ivybridge. Incinerator Proposal!
The proposed mass burn incinerator for New England is the wrong technology in the wrong location. The identification of this site in the Devon waste plan in 2005 by the county council, we believe did not take into account many of the EU and UK government criteria such as BPEO (Best Practical Environmental Option) and alternatives to incineration. The fact that the company bidding for this site have said on the record that they “will develop the site regardless of being awarded the contract from the Devon Waste Partnership” will show just how much money can be made over the next 25 years at the possible expense of our environment and resident's health. It also does not comply with a number of other plan policies including visual intrusion into the countryside, impact on adjoining conservation areas and Highways Agency national policy guidelines.
The impact on the surrounding area and potential impact on local wildlife sites have not been properly considered when selecting this site. The provision of greater incineration capacity than necessary "We would develop this facility independently whether we are awarded the waste contract or not" Viridor spokesman said. This would tend to undermine efforts to increase waste recycling and recovery locally, and encourage the transportation of waste from a more widespread catchment area, possibly from outside the county.
